2019 Lenten Series: God Is On the Cross
This year’s mid-week Lenten series relates to the power of the crucified and resurrected Jesus in our lives, as evidenced by Scripture and passages from Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s letters and sermons. Bonhoeffer was a theologian and pastor in Germany in the 1930’s, just before Hitler came dramatically to power. Bonhoeffer was executed by the Third Reich a few days before that totalitarian empire fell. Through all that, Bonhoeffer kept a connection to Jesus Christ, a worshiping community, daily events, and the faithful Christian walk.
Services will be held on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM, beginning with Ash Wednesday, March 6. The series continues the next five Wednesday evenings:
March 13 – Prayerful Reflection, based on Matthew 4:4 One does not live by bread alone;
March 20 – Self-Denial, Mark 8:34b If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.;
March 27 – Temptation, Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.;
April 3 – The Purpose of Suffering, II Corinthians 12:7-10
April 10 – The Cross, I Corinthians 1:23-24 …we proclaim Christ crucified…the power of God and the wisdom of God.
May these services and meditations be a meaningful part of your Lenten devotion and your Christian life. Come as you are. Bring a friend. Leave changed by Jesus.
